Picaresque Novel: It’s a type of novel which arrests my attention due to its source and content and thematic concern. Picaresque novel is a kind of rogue novel. We can literally translate it into 流浪汉小说。Have you ever read Don Quixote? It takes an realistic and satirical account of a anti-hero whose personal qualities are incompatible with what we commonly associate with the traditional hero: courage, sacrifice, perseverance, nobility and so on . The rogue hits the road for a series of episodic adventure and under moral conflict and some have been transformed into mature and integral heroes. What is most exciting is the description of the strange, absurd, laughable, intriguing experience on his road .I like vagrant style,:em216::em216: which is most close to the free and unbound lifestyle. Gothic Novel: have you ever read “Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris” 《巴黎圣母院》，then you will find it hard to erase the impression of grotesque, desolate cathedral from your mind in which there are sequent blood-curling and mysterious occurrence , the architecture is engrossing yet horrible, with the winding staircase, the repeatedly inexplicable paintings, the breathless and dark dungeon , the beautiful but victimized heroine, the apparently handsome and upright but actually wicked and dangerous hero, and the supernatural atmosphere……:em215::em215::em215:Horrible in setting! Thrilling in effect! Splendid in writing! Gothic novel allows for another kind of interpretation , it aims to arouse the hidden and subconscious human impulse ,the deep recess of human psychology which is replete with fear, evil, curiosity and escapism. Romanticism: Every one seems to have a kind of romantic temper or romantic expectation. So romanticism stretches its alluring arm to embrace you, or wave its mystical and dreamy eyes to rivet your attention. No logic, no reason, but instinct, intuition, individual emotion. Romanticism, initiated by Wordsworth, followed by Shelley, Keats, Byron, Coleridge and other poets and prose writers, reached the peak in 18th century. It advocated the return to nature, the common speech as the poetic expression, the aspiration of common folk, the strong tendency to emancipate the literary scene from the bondage of cold and
excessively apathetic rationalism. It’s truly the most fantastic literary event in the history of literature. It brings the easy breeze and fresh air into the depressing and unlovely literature. However the overindulgence in the personal expression and sentimental outcry will inevitably result in the emergence of sentimentalism which is the literary trend opposed to by the later writers. Some consider it as the backward of literature, I don’t think so. It represents the emotion, the natural simplicity and the emphasis on the man’s freedom in this world.
