The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into desperate country,and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to desperate things.
大多数人都过着一种悄无声息的绝望的生活。所谓听天由命即使一种毫无疑问的绝望。从绝望的城市走进绝望的乡村，你得表现出一种外强中干的勇敢之态，来勉强安慰自己。人类所谓的游戏和娱乐之下暗涌着一股根深蒂固的无意识的绝望之流。这种劳作之后的游戏决无娱乐可言。但智慧的特点是不做绝望之事。
---If you limit your choice only to what seems impossible or reasonable , your disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.
---There is a healthful hardiness about real dignity that never dreads contact and communion with other, however humble.

---Writing, at its best, is a lonely life .Organization for writers palliate the writer’s loneliness but I doubt if they improve his writing. He grows in public stature as he sheds his loneliness and often his work deteriorates. For he does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer, he must face eternity or the lack of it, each day.
---Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.
---Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is courage to continue that counts.
